Did you also show your best swing on the (mini)golf course during Green Expo in Ghent? Over three days, nearly 10,500 visitors dropped by at the celebration of the green sector, with a lot of attention to greenkeeping this year as well.
At the Green Expo in Ghent, innovation and sustainable green management took center stage this year. For the first time, there was also a lot to experience for you as a greenkeeper. A refresher course on plant protection products, a session on sustainable golf course management, the latest robotic mowers in the machine halls and various information stands on the construction and maintenance of sports and recreational fields. "With a fair like this, you end up in a real greenkeepers' bubble," explains Jeroen Arnouts, head of event at organizer Easyfairs. "For a day you only meet people who know your profession inside out and experience the same challenges or have solutions for them."
At Green Expo, quite a few projects also won awards. Like Mundo Amazonia at Bellewaerde amusement park. Krinkels created a green paradise there with 180 new large trees, shrubs and a herb layer with 12,500 plants.
Tuincentrum Lissens, Genker Plantencentrum and Tournesols received a Garden Centre Award. With the award, the Belgian Garden Centers Association wanted to encourage its members to return to their core business: plants. And Tuinen Dendauw, Pieter Gyssels, Jan Kok, Tuinwerken Quinten, Guerill and Hoveniersgebruikers bv won a Flemish Garden Contractor Award.
Jeroen Arnouts: "Climate change and increasingly stringent legislation mean that landscapers, garden contractors, greenkeepers and municipal greenkeepers have to work in a more climate-conscious way. How do you ensure proper water buffering and infiltration? What native and indigenous plant species do you choose for landscaping? How do you deal with weeds and wild plants? A climate-oriented approach to soil, water and planting requires a lot of knowledge, of biodiversity as well as new technologies. The fair plays an important role in this. Visitors could attend a lot of sessions for free, such as about climate roofs, naturalistic planting, vertical gardens and so on."
Organizer Easyfairs went all out for experience this year. There was the festive evening opening with live music, a climate route, the Green Innovation Lane with technological marvels and the Antwerp Model Building Groundwork. On Sunday, 500 children stopped by for a meet-and-greet with Maya the Bee.
