Wood is a unique and beautiful material. No one would deny that. Natural and versatile wood is still very popular, especially for ‘green’ structures such as garden sheds and carports. But there is a catch: wood requires a lot of regular maintenance. And for more and more consumers, that is precisely the stumbling block.
As the days get shorter and it gets dark earlier, Belgians have less time to spend their precious free moments on chores and maintenance. Exterior Living is responding to this trend. For several years now, its R&D department has been searching for alternative materials that are equivalent to wood in terms of strength, quality, and design, but are less demanding in terms of maintenance. Since 2018, Exterior Living has been offering a range of highly durable and maintenance-friendly aluminum products in addition to its regular range of wooden carports.

The choice of powder-coated aluminum is no coincidence. The material is strong, durable, and low-maintenance. It does not rot or rust, and a protective pre-treatment—in accordance with Qualicoat Seaside standards—guarantees a long service life even in the most demanding conditions. Therefore, frequent treatment is not necessary to maintain the quality of the material. To clean the aluminum, water and a mild, non-corrosive soap (e.g., car shampoo) are more than sufficient. No special maintenance products or paintbrushes are required.
In addition, aluminum is also very light. This greatly simplifies transport and installation. The building elements can simply be moved and installed by hand. No crane or other equipment is required.

Exterior Living had already played to the strengths of aluminum with its modular Maluwi concept. This allowed customers to design most of the structure themselves, choosing from various sizes for the aluminum base structure and a whole range of wooden or glass walls and even doors.
This was recently followed up with the Lumo concept, which offers simple and, above all, budget-friendly models. It consists of a black aluminum structure on one side and a polycarbonate roof on the other. Conveniently, the structure can be freestanding or attached to an existing building. It comes in a fixed width of 293 centimeters and five different lengths, with the placement of the posts largely free to choose. The roof can be finished in clear or opal polycarbonate, with a light transmission of 80 to 90 or 20 to 30 percent, respectively.
The simple yet elegant black structure of the Lumo looks sleek and modern at first glance, although the carport's simplicity means it fits in with a whole range of building and garden styles. Not only is your car parked in style, it also remains perfectly protected from rain and frost during the coming winter months.
The simpler the design, the more important the details. That is why square posts and a straight, sleek frame on the outside of the roof are used. This conceals the minimal curvature of the polycarbonate sheets and creates the illusion of a flat roof. For a perfect aesthetic result, both the water drainage and the screw connections are completely concealed. A UV protective layer prevents the polycarbonate sheets from yellowing. In this way, the entire structure retains its aesthetic and technical value for many years.
