Garden of Eden atop a garage in the city

Garden architect and contractor Bert Daenekindt from Mouscron has managed to expand his company since the year 2000 into a thriving business with ten employees. He designs and creates small and large gardens for Flemish, Walloon and French clients. Both design and execution, coordination, follow-up and maintenance are part of his tasks. Daenekindt was coined with numerous recognitions and awards, including 'Flemish garden contractor of the year'. His latest award-winning realization is a roof garden in the center of Kortrijk.

Functionally beautiful and original in all its simplicity is the best way to describe the creations of Bert Daenekindt Gardens. From years of expertise he ensures an ideal symbiosis between the existing house and garden in terms of style and choice of materials.' This was the comment of the jury at his election in 2014-2015 as 'Flemish garden contractor of the year' in the category 'gardens smaller than 1,000 m²'.

In his other participations in the competition, too, he almost always won gold and silver. In 2019, on his fifth participation in the competition, he was again named "Flemish Garden Contractor of the Year," this time with a small, remarkable roof garden in Kortrijk.

Every square meter utilized

This compact roof garden, constructed above the clients' garage, makes the best use of every available square meter. In an area of just under 220 m² he managed to accommodate a terrace, a swimming pool, a comfortable and fully equipped pool house and attractive plantings. Because the terrace was not directly connected to the house, he provided the space with all the necessary comforts so that the residents did not have to go downstairs unnecessarily to get anything. It became a completely autonomous experience zone, where the residents can enjoy an entire day undisturbed.

Equipped with all comforts

The pool house, built on a floor of 1 x 1 meter concrete tiles, was equipped with a gas fireplace, a refrigerator, a freezer, a toilet and a kitchen. A full-fledged, luxurious living space, so to speak. The comfort of the residents was also taken fully into account when it came to plant maintenance. For example, all aluminum planters were equipped with an automatic irrigation system. The terrace lighting was also automated. For the terrace itself, durable and stable Ipé was used.

Sophisticated and varied plantings

All plantings were installed in large aluminum planters, fitted with a light
substrate so as not to overload the roof. The planting scheme involved a varied selection. Among others, the evergreen Quercus ilex was used,
verbena, miscanthus, pennisetum ornamental grass, geranium and wisteria. Other eye-catchers on the terrace are the currant tree and the large olive tree. All the details are right on this project and have resulted in a luxurious oasis of tranquility, where residents can escape from busy city life for short or long periods of time.
