Durability is one of the biggest strengths of Wienerberger clay clinkers. Due to their ceramic composition, their service life exceeds that of most other materials. They also owe their breaking strength to this. The raw material clay is mainly extracted locally, limiting polluting transport. Clay bears a strong resemblance to ‘renewable energy,’ as the mined raw material is continually replenished via nearby waterways. Clay pits that are no longer operational are returned to nature, giving birth to fascinating and varied biotopes.
More than 14% of Flanders is paved and this figure is rising visibly. This makes it increasingly difficult for rainwater to penetrate the soil. In response, Wienerberger developed the water-passable Passaqua clay brick.
Such permeable paving allows rainwater to infiltrate locally into the subsoil, thus helping to avoid water shortages or flooding. The Passaqua is a strand-pressed clay paving, equipped with smart spacers, which make the joints six millimeters wide. Through these wider joints, which account for some ten percent of the total paved area, water easily finds its way to the subsoil. The smooth drainage also prevents weeds, algae growth or moss formation in the joints.
