The secret to a lawn that still looks good years after being laid is in the preparation of the subsoil. This is because the grass develops its roots in the top 40 centimeters of the soil, where it also collects its nutrients. The deeper and more extensive the grass can root, the more resistant it is to drought and other stressors. Grass plants with a strong root system are healthy and dominant in the lawn and will not be pushed away by weeds. 

Fluffing and adding

To allow good rooting, the soil must be airy and well-drained, and it must be able to retain sufficient moisture. Therefore, it is important to dig over the soil layer well at the time of construction so that it is well loosened. Take advantage of this tillage to mix sand or compost into the soil, depending on the composition of the soil. This creates porosity and benefits water retention. In addition, the organic matter content increases, which will stimulate fertility and soil life. Indeed, this soil life provides natural drainage and will prevent soil compaction. 

Pressing and seedbed

After coarse soil preparation comes the finer work of creating the seed bed. The first step is to press down on the loosened subsoil. In this way, the bearing capacity is restored and rutting or subsidence of the lawn is avoided. Next, the surface is leveled and all soil imperfections are eliminated immediately. 

After this, the focus is on fine-tuning the seed bed. This is the top top layer of 5 centimeters in which the grass seed develops and the first carrots will grow. This layer should be very crumbly so that the seeds can be nicely surrounded with soil and germinate quickly. During sowing, it is best to lightly undercut the seeds just to achieve this effect. It is recommended to roll the seed bed after sowing so that the seeds are pressed against the moist soil and soften immediately. In this way, the germination process is started immediately. Even when laying with turf, a similar preparation applies.

Performing all these steps for laying a lawn correctly requires a whole series of operations, which explains why laying a new lawn is quite expensive.
