PC17R-5 and PC20R-5 with conventional rear construction

With the new PC17R-5 and PC20R-5, Komatsu's extensive range of mini excavators has been expanded to as many as 12 models. Unlike the PC16R-3 and PC18MR-5, however, they are not inner-turners, but have a conventional rear structure with counterweight. This provides more lifting power and greater stability. It also allows for a larger cab, we hear from importer BIA, which is good news for machinists.

The PC17R-5 and PC20R-5 are two totally new machines, and Komatsu designed them from the demand for high performance and comfort, adaptability, low operating costs and a high degree of safety. Again, Komatsu build quality: all parts were developed and manufactured by Komatsu. Importer BIA distributes Komatsu's compact range in the Benelux mainly through a dealer network. At these local partners, about 20 of them in Belgium, local landscapers and contractors can go directly for purchase, rental and service.

Interestingly, both mini excavators were developed specifically for the European market. As such, they have the Stage V engine, now required here, which without DPF and Adblue ensures low fuel consumption and also low emissions. The Komatsu 3D67W-2 three-cylinder engine delivers 11.8 kW (15.8 HP) of power at 2600 rpm.

Many similarities

From the outside, there is hardly any difference to both mini excavators. They have the same design of superstructure, cab and rear end. According to Komatsu, the cab is the most spacious in its segment, with ergonomic controls and much attention to comfort. For example, an adjustable suspension Grammer seat is available as an option. Due to the large glass area, the operator experiences good all-round visibility on the job, while the redesigned rubber tracks ensure less perceptible vibrations.

The cab does not have the "tilting cab" increasingly common on mini excavators for easy engine maintenance. There is a simple reason why it cannot be tilted away: both mini excavators can easily be moved by crane via the fixed lifting lugs on the cabin roof. In order to make daily inspection and maintenance as easy as possible, three large service hatches have been provided and many technical components have been ergonomically positioned. As a result, most maintenance can easily be done from ground level.

Because of the large service hatches, most maintenance is perfectly doable from ground level.

Obvious differences

Even though both mini excavators look very similar externally, in practice there are the necessary differences and these are reflected in things like equipment/options and lifting and breakout forces.

For example, the 1.7-1.8 ton PC17R-5 has an underlying boom cylinder and ample standard equipment for wide applications. Its compactness is evidenced by its narrow dozer blade and the breakout force on the bucket is 11.9 kN. In contrast, the approximately 2-ton PC20R-5 has a wide dozer blade and, thanks to its overhead boom cylinder, much more breakout force: 15.9 kN. The protection of the cylinder allows trucks to be loaded. With the PC20R-5, the many options available ex-factory make it highly customizable for specific jobs. Both machines are available with two arm lengths: standard or long.

The 1.7-1.8 ton PC17R-5 is easily transported within the 3.5 ton legislation on a standard trailer.

Versatility and safety

Both mini-excavators use the same HS undercarriage with new track undercarriage and adjustable track width. Depending on the job site situation, the track width can be widened to achieve greater stability, or narrowed to pass a narrow passage or for transport on a trailer.

The slightly heavier PC20R-5 can be equipped ex-factory with a hydraulic tilt, for which a third auxiliary circuit is possible as an option and a fourth circuit for a hydraulic quick coupler. Another option is proportional control for attachments.

Safety has always been a priority for Komatsu. Therefore, these mini excavators are also equipped with the double lock system. This ensures that the machine never makes unexpected movements that could be dangerous for bystanders. Furthermore, the machines use the Komtrax wireless communication system.
