Advancing insight is what they call it, or - as they so eloquently put it in English - “hindsight is 20/20.” With some seemingly minor, yet significant adjustments, STIHL hopes to redraw the standard for battery-powered brush cutters in that way this year as well.
Let's emphasize it right away: a small modification is not necessarily a simple modification. Often it is precisely the seemingly logical interventions that require a great deal of technical research and engineering. “Moreover, there is always a difference between the drawing board and practice,” adds Wouter Helsen of STIHL. “Before we launch a new product, we therefore have it extensively tested by a diversified audience of professional partners. The new FSA 135 battery-powered brushcutter, the update to the FSA 130, was also first tested and fine-tuned for two seasons before its launch in May. All this in order to pull the ergonomics of the device in particular to the highest level.”
The main modification of the FSA 135 compared to its predecessor, of course, came on the drawing board. “The new brushcutter was developed specifically with increased maneuverability and ergonomics in mind. Like the FSA 130, it is a versatile brushcutter that can be combined with almost all of our professional cutting attachments, but if the FSA 130 could only be used in combination with a back- or hip-mounted battery system, we have added a battery shaft here.”
“When a high degree of maneuverability is required, mowing in tight conditions, or the user is struggling with certain complaints, the batteries - which, by the way, are compatible across the entire STIHL battery line - can be inserted directly into the machine. Without having to sacrifice power or sharpness in the process.”
The FSA 135 comes standard with a double carrying strap, but can be used in combination with all carrying belts and harnesses. “Since it is no longer necessary to use a back- or hip-borne battery, for example, it is also perfectly possible to work with the brushcutter harness of an old gasoline-powered one.”
In fact, based on initial user experience, STIHL made one more small yet important modification to the chassis. “Compared to the FSA 130, we moved the pick-up for the belt a little bit. This may seem trivial, but it increases the working range from roughly 1.55 meters to 2 meters, regardless of who is handling the machine. A significant advantage in terms of both maneuverability and versatility, in other words.”
Like other STIHL battery-powered tools, the FSA 135 is equipped with a powerful and low-maintenance EC motor, whose speed can be infinitely adjusted. The air filter with metal mesh ensures optimum cooling and has been positioned so that it is easy to clean without having to completely open the engine.
As befits power tools, the FSA 135 is also very quiet. Via the LED display, the noise level can be perfectly monitored, as can, of course, the battery charge. In addition, the housing is already equipped with the STIHL Smart Connector 2A so that the machine can be integrated into the fleet management system without any problems.
