Sturdy and healthy rhododendrons, plantable year-round

Firm and healthy rhododendrons, plantable year-round

Rhodes nursery uses advanced technology

Rhodes nursery in Kapellen and Brasschaatis specialized in growing rhododendrons in open ground and in Air Root Containers (ARC) for professional customers. The range includes more than thirty varieties in regular sizes from 80/100 to 200/250, as solitary plants up to four meters high, in multi-stemmed umbrella shapes and others. A major advantage of the ARC plants is that they can be planted year-round.

Raised in pure sandy soil

Abroad, rhododendrons are often raised in acidic peat soils. These plants have a harder time adapting to our local soil conditions. All plants from Rhodes Nursery, on the other hand, are grown in a pure, but fairly neutral sandy soil, so they will take root immediately on another sandy soil or a heavy soil improved with peat and/or lean sand.

All plants from open ground are provided with a healthy, well-rooted root ball, proportional to the size of the plant. The root balls are wrapped in wire cloth and the larger specimens have a wire root ball. Fertilizers are kept to a minimum when growing, and no herbicides or insecticides are used either.

Potted Plants in Air Root Containers

What is remarkable about the potted plants is that they are not grown in ordinary containers, but in the unique Air Rooth Containers. These are pots without bottoms,  generously provided with round air holes that add extra oxygen to the root system, which can thus grow perfectly and not be suffocated.

The roots grow outward and are guided back in upon contact with the air, as it were. So no more spinning roots on the inside of the pot. The air holes, together with the specially selected potting soil, ensure that many hair roots are created quickly. Within 12 to 15 weeks, this creates a good root ball. The plants can absorb more nutrients and water and therefore grow better. The stress of transplanting happens at Rhodes Nursery in the pot and no longer with the customer, when the rhododendron is planted in the garden.

Extended planting season

The great advantage of the ARC container system is that the plants can be planted out all year round, regardless of weather conditions. So the landscaper no longer has to adhere to the traditional, limited planting season. From a commercial point of view, this is obviously a great advantage for the green professional.

The potted rhododendrons from Rhodes Nursery offer other advantages. For example, here we are dealing with a "pure" root ball, because it is packaged. As a gardener, you can guarantee faster and easier regrowth. The plants also do not have to deal with transplanting stress. However, moisture conditions must be monitored. Due to the use of potting soil, the clods have a limited weight, so they can usually - with the exception of the very largest specimens - still be moved manually.

Buttons pays off

When transplanting a rhododendron, the balance between leaves and roots is temporarily disturbed for a while. If the plant then has to put extra energy into producing both flowers and seeds, growth may stagnate. To achieve rapid growth after planting, it is advisable to preventively prune away all flower buds. To still obtain flowering in the first year, it is best to remove wilted flowers immediately after flowering. That way, no extra energy is lost on seed formation. Flowers and growth for the next year are stimulated by removing all flowers after the current flowering.

Useful planting schemes

Rhodes Nursery puts its long experience at the service of the green professional, in the form of planting schedules that can be downloaded from the website as PDFs. These schedules take into account an optimal location, the size of the plants, the size of the section to be planted and the type of planting chosen. This allows the gardener to work perfectly to create various massifs, such as corner massifs, organic massifs and all kinds of straight massifs.
