The invisible benefactor for your soil

The invisible benefactor for your soil

As local residents, we increasingly value the outdoors. That fine landscaped (new construction) garden facing south, picnics with friends in a park, a relaxing game of golf, or the son scoring the winning goal at the local football club. Good soil makes for better outdoor living. And for that, you can count on the earthworm.

Forward-thinking gardeners and horticulturists have used it before, and with success; the earthworm. But little by little, more and more earthworms are being released in Dutch municipalities in places that call for them. You don't see them, but you can count on a lot of valuable underground labour.

Earthworms dig tunnels, loosening the soil's structure. These enthusiastic pacesetters ensure
That the crumbly structure of the soil returns. This returns oxygen to the soil. The soil thus regains its natural resilience. The earthworms soon burrow three metres deep, thus ensuring the perfect supply and drainage of water. Not entirely unimportant in times of climate change.

But the earthworm does more. Plant roots also grow in the corridors, giving them a beautiful root system. In short, these hard workers are an absolute asset in any community.

Where do you put them out?

- In new-build houses: the soil in the new garden is often very poor in structure due to the driving of heavy machinery during construction.
- On lawns and golf courses: we often see wet spots on grass, where the water cannot escape.
- On football pitches: and especially the goal area, where there is a lot of football and the ground is therefore of poor texture.
- When planting and transplanting trees: tree sand, fertiliser or compost is often used in the planting hole. The tree roots, but lacks connection with the surrounding soil.
- For existing trees: trees in streets and along roads are often in poor soil, sand and crushed rubble, and so on....

If you are a municipality, contractor, landscaper or private citizen who would like more information on earthworms, please contact:

Finally, a fun idea: give new residents of a newly built house a kilo of earthworms as a gift for their new garden!
