Afterthought TurfTech 2024
On Nov. 12 and 13, 2024, the KRC Genk stadium hosted the first edition of TurfTech, a groundbreaking event for professionals in turf management and sports field maintenance. Florian Mans, organizer and also international sales manager at Stogger Turf Care, brought together a diverse group of experts and innovators to share knowledge and ideas about the latest technologies and practices.
In his opening remarks, Florian emphasized TurfTech's ambition to unite the market even further. "We want an event that is open source," he said, "where we publish and share all presentations and findings with everyone who contributes to creating the best playing fields." Although last-minute changes to the program were necessary, the featured speakers managed to deliver sessions that combined both commercial insight and hands-on experience. The enthusiasm of the speakers and the commitment of the participants made this first edition an inspiring start to what can - and will! - become an annual event.
1. Innovation in fieldcovers: Ken Curry (Covermaster)
Ken Curry kicked off the event with a presentation on the power of field covers in extreme weather conditions. He highlighted how modern materials such as polyethylene not only effectively dissipate snow and water, but also save energy. One notable example was how using a combination of field covers and underground heating can reduce energy consumption by as much as 80%. The use of this technology offers a progressive solution for clubs with limited budgets, especially in times of rising energy costs.
2. Water management reinvented: Rudolf Molenaar (Draintalent)
Rudolf Molenaar emphasized sustainable water management, a key issue in an era of climate change. He presented the Drain Talent system, which can both infiltrate and drain water to ensure optimal soil moisture. At Sparta Rotterdam, this technology led to 60% less water consumption and a healthier turf, demonstrating how innovative drainage and storage methods provide both ecological and economic benefits.
3. Autonomy in turf management: John Coleman (Infinicut)
John Coleman brought the focus to electrification and autonomous technology. His presentation on Infinicut mowers showed how these machines not only offset labor shortages, but also minimize the environmental impact of traditional equipment. Coleman emphasized that autonomous technologies, supported by artificial intelligence, have a decided future in turf management.
4. Data as a guiding force: Reece Watson (Raw Stadia)
Reece Watson demonstrated how data-driven insights not only optimize field properties, but also contribute to injury prevention and improved athlete performance. By monitoring factors such as soil moisture, grip and stability, it becomes possible to tailor fields specifically to the needs of players and coaches. This makes data analytics an integral part of modern field management.
5. LED innovations: Pieter Peeters (Stogger Turf Care)
The day ended with an in-depth presentation by Pieter Peeters on the impact of LED lighting on turf growth. He introduced a new generation of dynamic lighting systems, which allow light spectrum and intensity to be precisely adjusted to the needs of the turf. This results in faster growth, lower energy costs and longer life of the technology After the presentations, it was time for a tour of the beautiful field. The gala evening ensured that Stogger Turf Care's LED lighting was also aesthetically pleasing. The first day concluded with a well-deserved meal, which was followed by lots of interaction and networking.
1. Smart and effective grass management: Dean Gilasbey (Natural Grass)
Dean Gilasbey, director of international pitch management at Natural Grass, shared his insights on how data and technology contribute to more efficient pitch management. He highlighted the benefits of AirFibr technology, a hybrid turf solution that combines natural and synthetic fibers for optimal performance. With a focus on water conservation and smart practices, Dean showed how modern techniques improve turf management.
2. Flexible solutions: Ben Taylor (Campey Turf Care Systems)
Campey presented their latest field maintenance equipment, including machines that can aerate and regenerate fields more efficiently. This technology plays a crucial role in restoring intensively played fields.
3. Environmentally conscious line markers: Matt Bartle (The Pitchmark Group)
Matt Bartle brought an innovative take on line marking with hybrid marking system. By using less paint and still achieving better results, this technology contributes to a more sustainable approach in the industry. In addition, Pitchmark presented their new eco-friendly packaging and stainless steel sprayers as a response to the growing demand for sustainability.
4. Guest speaker and expert: Eddy Van Endert (KRC Genk)
As head groundsman at KRC Genk, Eddy Van Endert offered a hands-on insight into how his team keeps the stadium field in top condition, even under heavy loads. His experiences highlighted the importance of collaboration between technology and craftsmanship.
The two-day event highlighted the power of collaboration and innovation in turf management. Florian Mans and his team have created a platform with TurfTech where experts not only share ideas, but also offer concrete solutions that can be directly applied in practice.
Whether it was fieldcovers, sustainable water management, autonomous technology or data-driven management, each topic was brought with passion and expertise.TurfTech 2024 showed that the future of turf management is driven by technology, sustainability and last but not least ... collaboration! The combination of theoretical knowledge, practical experience and networking opportunities made this event an indispensable appointment for the industry. The tone has been set for another edition where this inspiring journey will undoubtedly continue.
