Guide to a healthy lawn

Guide to a healthy lawn

After all, every garden deserves a perfectly healthy lawn. As a Belgian manufacturer of garden machinery, ELIET has a thing for lawns. Over the past fifteen years, the company has invested the lion's share of its annual R&D budget in the development and expansion of a range of lawn care machines. Each and every one of these machines enables garden contractors to maintain private lawns like professional greenkeepers.

One mission

ELIET sees it as its mission to inspire garden contractors with the same love for lawns. The need is great, because ornamental grass is suffering greatly under the influence of climate change. Paying extra attention to the health of the lawn is not a luxury. It is no coincidence that the recently launched national Curieuze Neuzen research project by the University of Antwerp has chosen the drought problem in gardens as its subject. Since lawns are the dominant natural element in gardens, the moisture balance of the lawn soil will often determine the garden's susceptibility to drought. The media launched an appeal to motivate 5,000 volunteers to make their lawns available to science. In no time at all, ten times that number signed up to participate in the research. This shows how much the topic is on people's minds and also proves the concern and perhaps even despair of garden lovers about the future of their gardens/lawns. It is high time that gardening professionals with a passion for lawns join forces to offer solutions as lawn experts.

Avoid open spaces

A healthy lawn can be recognized by its dense vegetation and good root structure. Grass will root well if the soil allows it to. Soil life is a crucial factor in this. An intense soil fauna of earthworms, nematodes, and beneficial microorganisms ensures an open soil structure with good moisture permeability, allowing organic matter to penetrate the soil and release its nutrients. Grass roots benefit from this soil activity to grow deeper, so that they can tap into moisture at greater depths in times of scarcity.

The density with which grass plants grow next to each other is naturally under pressure. Under the influence of all kinds of negative environmental factors, grass can get into trouble. Some plants cannot cope with these stress factors and die. The open space that this creates in the lawn will not be filled in by the grass itself. This is because a lawn is mowed weekly—or even daily in the case of robotic mowers—which means that the grass can never develop seeds to reproduce. Other candidates are ready and waiting to fill that open space. Moss and weeds will spread relentlessly from these spots. Ornamental grass will thus come under increasing pressure. Moss in particular will spread like wildfire across the lawn.

Renovate

To restore grass vegetation in a lawn, reseeding is necessary. All too often, this is used as a last resort when the condition of a lawn is already dire. However, good lawn management will prevent these situations by taking preventive action. Garden contractors will ensure that the lawn is rejuvenated regularly by reseeding annually. Each overseeding treatment will introduce a new crop of young, vital grass into the turf.
Natural selection will ensure that older, less resistant plants disappear. This will maintain a permanently fresh green lawn.

Overseeding

The success of a lawn renovation starts with good preparation. After mowing, you will need to thoroughly clean the lawn. After all, space is needed for the young grass to grow unhindered. To make this cleaning even more effective in the future, ELIET is launching the first of a new range of advanced scarifiers this spring. The E550ZR differs from the classic ELIET scarifier in its 30% higher raking efficiency. The machine owes this to its over-the-top rotating Double CutTM blades. Because the blades rotate against the direction of travel, they grip the moss and thatch better and then lift it effectively out of the turf. The blades also rotate with a spacing of only 15 millimeters, leaving little lawn surface untouched. This 55-centimeter-wide scarifier is also self-propelled. This allows you to comfortably and thoroughly prepare the lawn for overseeding. The overseeder should only be used once the thinned-out lawn has been cleared down to the soil.

When overseeding, the grass seed must end up in the soil; only then does it have the best chance of growing. ELIET overseeding machines cut grooves in the soil for this purpose. The patented ELIET seed distribution mechanism then deposits the grass seed in these grooves in a very measured and precise manner. The roller on which the machine runs immediately presses the grooves closed, after which the seedbed is neatly covered with the remaining soil. This careful process, with which ELIET DZC machines complete this rejuvenation treatment, ensures that results are visible in just two weeks.

Start renovating! With the right equipment, you can get started right away, and that perfect lawn will be within reach.
